Tattoo ink FAQs
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
The short answer is yes. The long answer is also yes. In tattooing, you are being repeatedly poked with a needle. Most tattoo guns are set to deliver over 80 pokes a second. If you even get a 15 minute tattoo done, that means you have been poked over seventy two thousand times! If you don’t think that will hurt, you are crazy.
If it hurts, why do people do it?
For one, it’s addictive, and quite literally so. When a tattoo is finished, your body is flooded with endorphins, or the “natural high” signals of your nervous system. The longer the tattoo, the bigger the high; and anyone who has had one done can attest to the potency of the effect. Another reason is that many people get tattoos of things they consider of great personal importance. Something worth the pain, so to speak, is what they’re doing it for.
Is it sanitary, is it safe?
Absolutely, tattoo artists wear gloves, use sterile single use needles, and sanitize both their instruments and your skin before beginning a tattoo. You have a higher chance of getting sick from going out to eat than you do from getting a tattoo. Safety is another concern with many. The inks used are not harmful to your body. The vast majority of pigments are the oxidized form of one metal or another, which makes them chemically inert unless they come into contact with specific acids. Since your body doesn’t carry those acids around in your blood steam, you don’t have to worry.
