Tattoo Shop

Friendly might not be the first thing that pops into your mind upon entering your local tattoo shop, but that’s not what they’re usually about anyway. A tattoo shop is a place for getting a tattoo; although many shops also perform body piercings. They are often run in cramped quarters, with an adjustable chair similar to a barber’s chair for many of the procedures. Other shops have a patient table like you would find in a doctor’s office.

The artists are often the owners of tattoo shops, which creates a unique position of being in charge of both the business end of things, and the artistic output of the artist. This is a good position to be in, since no artist wants a bean counter standing over their shoulder and telling them what they can and cannot do. Tattoo artists also build relationships with their customers, relying on word of mouth for many of their sales.

Of course, the other way a tattoo shop gets its sales is the classic “where am I, why does my head hurt, and what’s this thing on my arm?” tattoo. After a night of drunken fun, many people stumble into a tattoo parlor to get inked, which is why they keep the hours that they do. Many shops are open 24 hours, or at least late into the night to catch just such clientele.
